Europe sees a 34% increase in battery-electric vehicle sales in January 2025

According to the latest report from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), in January 2025, new vehicle registrations in the EU fell by -2.6%. Specifically, battery-electric vehicles accounted for 15% of the market share, compared to the low comparison level of 10.9% in January 2024.

Hybrid-electric vehicles took the lead, dominating nearly 34.9% of the market and once again becoming the top choice for car buyers in the EU. Meanwhile, the combined market share of gasoline and diesel cars fell to 39.4% in January 2025, down from 48.7% a year ago.

Increase in electric vehicle sales

In January 2025, sales of new battery-electric vehicles grew by 34%, reaching 124,341 units, representing a market share of 15%.

Three of the four largest markets in the region, which together account for 64% of all battery-electric vehicle registrations, posted solid double-digit gains: Germany (+53.5%), Belgium (+37.2%), and the Netherlands (+28.2%), while France saw a slight decrease of -0.5%.

According to this report, in January, hybrid-electric vehicle registrations in the EU increased by 18.4%, driven by significant growth in the four largest markets: France (+52.2%), Spain (+23.5%), Germany (+13.7%), and Italy (+10.6%). This led to 290,014 units being registered in the first month of 2025, representing 34.9% of the EU market share.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle registrations decreased in January 2025 by 8.5% to 61,406 units. This decrease was mainly due to significant reductions in key markets such as Belgium (-66.6%) and France (-54%). As a result, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles now account for 7.4% of total car sales in the EU.

Decline in gasoline and diesel car registrations

In January 2025, gasoline car registrations saw a significant drop of 18.9%, with all major markets showing declines.

Similarly, the diesel car market dropped by 27%, leading to a market share of 10% for diesel vehicles in January. Overall, two-digit declines were observed in most EU markets.
